Welcome to the first issue of Lifting Lives, the newsletter of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. Today marks one month since the Alliance’s launch on 18 November during the Rio G20 Leaders’ Summit.

Since then, the Alliance has continued to grow, welcoming new members like Cameroun, New Zealand, and Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI), and advancing its governance and Support Mechanism. It now comprises 164 members, including 88 countries, 25 intergovernmental organizations, nine financial institutions, and 42 philanthropic, academic, and non-governmental partners.

This monthly newsletter offers a brief update on key news and upcoming events related to the Alliance. Future editions may feature highlights, opinions, and stories from our members, showcasing how national policies and programs can lift lives and bring dignity, opportunity, and hope.

A word from the interim coordinators in Brazil

As we wrap-up this intense year, we would like to thank you for all your efforts and partnership throughout this process. In thes pace of 12 months, we launched and concluded the G20 Task Force, successfully commissioning and discussing key international reports on different aspects of how to end hunger and extreme poverty; elaborating and approving the Global Alliance’s foundational documents; and establishing the Global Alliance with 148 founding members. The list is still growing…

Last but not least, together we were able to mobilize a wide group of engaged partners and issue a series of ambitious commitments for the fight against hunger and poverty in little more than two months. As the announcements stated, the 2030 Sprints represent the strongest ever collective attempt to turn the tide and ﬁnally end hunger and extreme poverty through evidence-based, large-scale policies and programs for uplifting the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations.

All those that contributed can be rightly proud of that accomplishment. Those that did not can still join in on the action under any of those policy areas in the months ahead.

The 2030 Sprints announcements, along side all submitted Statements of Commitment from the Alliance’s current 160+ member countries and organizations, will generate a very strong starting basis for the operation of the Alliance.

Now, the Global Alliance is entering a transition period before being fully operational. In the following months, the Brazilian government will work with FAO, chosen as the host organization, to fully establish the Alliance’s secretariat, called the “Support Mechanism”. The Alliance’s Support Mechanism will comprise a team of experts that will take forward its day-to-day operations, including the matchmaking process. Based on the current proceedings with FAO, which will handle the staff selection and contracting process, we expect the Mechanism to be fully operational before the end of 1st half of 2025.

While the necessary structures are put in place, our team in Brazil (Social Development, Foreign Affairs and IPEA) will continue to operate the policy basket curation, receive expressions of interest for programs and activities to be carried out once the Support Mechanism is operational, and relay all that information to it as part of the transition. With support from UNRISD and socialprotection.org, we will also continue to run website, communications and social media on behalf of the Global Alliance until those functions are assumed by the Support Mechanism over the next few months. The intention is to keep the momentum going and avoiding a communications gap as we transition from the G20 Task Force to the Global Alliance proper.

While we will have to wait for the full constitution of the Support Mechanism in order to start the core functions of match making and partnership building, we will, hopefully as soon as next February, start receiving and filing formal requests of support from member countries in order to pass them on to the Support Mechanism once constituted.

At the same time, we will be working in more informal conversations with FAO, as the host organization, and with the other UN agencies and programs, the MDBs and other Alliance members to start mapping out areas of both demand and supply and explore options for joint technical assistance to be provided as part of the activities supported by the Alliance.

We will also continue to provide interim support to the setting up of the relevant governance mechanisms, fully in line with the approved Global Alliance Terms of Reference and Governance Framework.

A key milestone will be reached next February 11, when we expect to hold the first meeting of the Global Alliance’s Board of Champions, with the kind support and partnership of IFAD, which will host the meeting on the margins of the 48th session of IFAD’s Governing Council. The Global Alliance will also feature in the centre stage event in the Council’s opening day, on February 12.

World leaders launch the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty

Emerging from a year-long process of inclusive dialogue and collaboration, the Alliance was born with 148 founding members, including 82 countries, the African Union, the European Union, 24 international organizations, nine international financial institutions, and 31 philanthropic and non-governmental organizations. This ground breaking initiative aims to fast-track global efforts toward eradicating hunger and poverty, key priorities under the SDGs.

In a powerful demonstration of global solidarity, governments, multilateral organizations, development banks, and philanthropic institutions have announced the widest ever collective attempt to turn the tide and ﬁnally end hunger and extreme poverty through evidence-based, large-scale policies and programs for uplifting the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations.

The series of transformative efforts portend early action linked to the imminent launch of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty. The “2030 Sprints” focus on interventions with aproven track-record in delivering results at scale: cash transfers, school meals, socioeconomic inclusion, maternal and early childhood support, smallholder and family farming, and water access solutions. These efforts amount to the most ambitious initiative to date aimed at reinvigorating the path to meet Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 2.

The Alliance takes a significant step towards its operationalization with the announcement of the first members of its Board of Champions. This group is a diverse of senior representatives drawn from the Alliance’s members. The designated Champions must have significant responsibility or influence in decision-making within their affiliated entities regarding program implementation.

Brazil and Qatar discuss the holding of the first Summit of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty in 2025

Wellington Dias, Brazil’s Minister of Development, Social Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation, met with Mubarak Al Kuwari, Executive Director of the Permanent Committee for Conferences (PCOC) of the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, to discuss the upcoming UN World Summit on Social Development and the possibility of hosting the inaugural summit of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty along side it. The UN summit is scheduled for November 4-6, 2025, in Qatar. The meeting aimed to align the two events, leveraging the momentum of the UN summit to launch the Global Alliance summit.
