We are pleased to share with you the April edition of Lifting Lives. This month’s updates are particularly significant, beginning with the April 7 meeting of the Core Group of the Global Alliance’s Board of Champions.

In parallel, the Global Alliance was actively represented during the 2025 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF, where its role was highlighted across several high-level discussions, reaffirming the Alliance’s growing influence in shaping global development priorities.

The Alliance also featured prominently at the G20 Agriculture Working Group and Food Security Task Force meetings held in Durban, South Africa. It was recognized as a key initiative driving resilient and inclusive food systems. Notably, a special session led by Brazil emphasized the need to scale inclusive climate action in agriculture, further highlighting the Alliance’s relevance in the lead-up to COP30.

As the Alliance continues to turn commitment into action, we thank you for your ongoing engagement and support. We hope this edition offers valuable insights into our shared mission to end hunger and poverty.

A word from the interim coordinators in Brazil

The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is beginning to turn promises into action. On April 7, the Core Group of the Global Alliance’s Board of Champions convened to chart the next steps in the fight against hunger and poverty. Building on the priority actions outlined by the Board of Champions in its inaugural meeting in February, the interim support team briefed the Core Group on the progress of the fast-track implementation plans for a set of 13 countries. The Core Group stressed the need for plans that integrate targeted policies, ensure sustainable financing, and avoid unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles.

The Fast Track Implementation Plan focuses on countries that have expressed interest in implementing programs drawn from the Alliance’s Policy Basket, ranging from early childhood interventions to strengthening food systems and enhancing cash transfer initiatives. With strong support from UN agencies and multilateral development banks, these early efforts are validating country priorities and assembling a synthetic implementation plan before calling on the Alliance’s members to support programme implementation as per their Statement of Commitments.

The Core Group agreed with a proposal to push for the inclusion of stronger, clearer language on financing the fight against hunger and poverty in the 4th International Conference on Financing for Development (FFD4) final declaration. A Guidance Note with language suggestions has been prepared by the interim support team with contributions from FAO, IFAD, ILO,UNICEF, USP2030, and other willing contributors. Moreover, plans are underway for the Alliance’s strong presence in Seville during the FFD4 Conference, including a side event co-hosted by Brazil and Spain, co-chairs of the Global Alliance Board of Champions.

The interim support team has started conversations with the Government of Qatar and the UN secretariat to prepare the first Summit Against Hunger and Poverty, which will take place on the sidelines of the World Summit for Social Development in November 2025, in Doha.

We also thank all members who have supported the drafting of a Guidance Note on integrating evidence-based solutions on hunger and poverty with climate action in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). The Note looks at the Global Alliance Policy Basket and highlights programs such as adaptive and shock-responsive social protection, environmentally conditional cash transfers, climate-resilient public works, and climate-smart agriculture and food systems that can help countries achieve their climate-related targets while following the principle of a just transition. Finally, we would like to welcome the new members of the Alliance World Meteorological Organization (WMO), Dubai Cares, Universidade de Brasília (UnB), Luxembourg, BOMA, International Agri-Food Network (IAFN), Organización del Tratado de Cooperación Amazónica (OTCA), Global Child Nutrition Foundation (GCNF).

We are aware that the road ahead will demand sustained commitment, political will, and agile coordination from all Global Alliance members. But as these early steps show, the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is not passively waiting for change — it is actively building it.

Global Alliance at G20 meeting in Durban, South Africa

The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty featured prominently during the first in-person meetings of the G20 Agriculture Working Group and Food Security Task Force, held in Durban, South Africa. The Alliance’s inclusion in both tracks, alongside the establishment of a dedicated Food Security Task Force under South Africa’s presidency, reflects the G20’s strengthened commitment to advancing food security and tackling rural poverty.

In discussions on climate resilience, sustainable food systems, and macroeconomic drivers of hunger, the Alliance was recognized as a concrete mechanism to accelerate national action. Its promotion of policies that simultaneously address food insecurity and rural poverty highlights the Alliance’s growing role in mobilizing collective action toward achieving the 2030 Agenda’s goals.

During the 2025 Spring Meetings of the World Bank and IMF, representatives from the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty actively participated in various high-level meetings and side events.

Inputs on the Outcome Document language for the 4th Financing for Development Conference in Seville (FFD4), including for the upcoming negotiations in NY during the week of April 28- May 30, and future sessions.

Guidance Note on NDCs for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty

Guidance note for policy makers on integrating evidence-based solutions on hunger and poverty with climate action in Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), taking advantage of the current NDC 3.0 review period for UNFCCC COP30 in Belém. The time to act is now.
