DEAR READER,

We are pleased to share with you the August 2025 edition of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Newsletter. This month has been marked by remarkable developments, as the Alliance continues to grow stronger as a platform for collective action and prepares for a historic milestone. Nearly one year after its launch, the First Leaders’ Meeting of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty will take place in Doha on November 3, on the eve of the Second World Summit for Social Development. In addition, we celebrate major achievements from Alliance Members GiveDirectly and Oxford University, which conducted a large-scale study showing a significant positive impact of cash transfers on child mortality.

A word from the interim coordinators

Dear friends and colleagues,

As we continue the steady, daily work of building the Alliance, we would like to share some updates on that work, including the preparation for the First Leaders’ Meeting of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, that is taking place in Doha, November 3, on the eve of the Second World Summit for Social Development. This will be our first high-level gathering to be held since the Alliance’s launch at the G20 Summit in 2024. The Meeting is a unique opportunity to review the progress made, showcase our collective achievements, and drive further commitments in the global fight against hunger and poverty. Holding our meeting back-to-back with the World Summit presents a strategic moment to galvanize political support and ensure concrete means of implementation for our shared mission.

In preparation, the Alliance’s Core Group will hold its third meeting on September 9 at the request of Co-Chairs Minister Wellington Dias of Brazil and Secretary of State Eva Granados of Spain. On that note, we are pleased to share that the FAO is concluding the selection and hiring process for the support mechanism. We expect that by the time the Board of Champions meets in October, most of the professionals and experts who will make up the team will be hired.

We are also delighted to see the Alliance continues to grow in strength and scope. This month, we confirmed the appointment of representatives to two new shared seats on the Board of Champions, respectively for philanthropic foundations and civil society organizations. Furthermore, we are thrilled to welcome five new members: Banque Ouest Africaine de Développement (BOAD), Results for Development (R4D), Columbia University, the World Farmers’ Organisation (WFO), and Redes da Maré. Their commitments will enrich our collaborative efforts.

Our work on the ground is moving into a crucial new phase. Fast Track implementation plans have been shared with all Global Alliance members, and as we finalize this newsletter, we are awaiting their submissions of Expression of Interest. The interim coordination team has been actively supporting interested members to finalize these submissions. This is an important first step toward a next round of direct interaction with country representatives, facilitated by the Global Alliance support team, aiming at drawing the detailed partnership arrangements that will ultimately enable program implementation.

The work on all of those fronts coincides with a critical transition period for the Alliance, as the permanent staff of the Support Mechanism is expected to start operating soon, gradually replacing your current interim Support Team. More details on that will have to wait for the next edition of the newsletter…

Warm regards,

Fábio Veras, Renato Godinho and Saulo Ceolin

Coordinators for the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty’s interim support team

First Leaders’ Meeting of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty

Prepare and Save the Date! The First Leaders’ Meeting of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty will take place at the Qatar National Convention Centre (QNCC) on November 3, as part of, and on the eve of, the official opening of the Second World Summit for Social Development (Doha, November 4-6).

This is the first meeting of the Global Alliance to be convened at the highest level since its launch at the G20 Summit in November 2024. It will review global progress towards the Alliance’s objectives, showcase the Alliance’s accomplishments during the past year, issue high-level guidance to the Alliance’s members and provide an opportunity for further commitments and momentum in the fight against hunger and poverty.

Cash transfers reduce infant mortality by nearly 50% in Kenya, new study finds

A large-scale study in Kenya has revealed that providing a one-time cash transfer of US$1,000 to families living in poverty reduced infant deaths by 48%, one of the largest impacts ever recorded for a social program. The research, led by experts from the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Oxford, tracked more than 100,000 births in rural areas, in partnership with the organization GiveDirectly. Results highlight the potential of direct support programs to save lives and offer insights to accelerate the Alliance’s Fast Track plans.
