A group of governments, multilateral development banks, UN agencies, and some of the world’s largest philanthropic organizations has announced plans to significantly increase access to school meal programs. The initiative marks an important step towards eradicating child hunger and improving access to education on a global scale.
The school meal initiative aims to reach 150 million children by 2030 in low- and lower-middle-income countries—more than double the current number of children receiving school meals in these countries. The proposed measures, which include national and international actions related to funding, coordination, and provision, would represent a major step towards a world where every child in school receives at least one hot and nutritious meal every day.
