Wellington Dias, Brazil’s Minister of Development, Social Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation, met with Mubarak Al Kuwari, Executive Director of the Permanent Committee for Conferences (PCOC) of the Qatari Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Saturday (December 7) to discuss the upcoming UN World Summit on Social Development and the possibility of hosting the inaugural summit of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty alongside it.The UN summit is scheduled for November 4-6, 2025, in Qatar. The meeting aimed to align the two events, leveraging the momentum of the UN summit to launch the Global Alliance summit.“The Global Alliance refocuses our attention on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and empowers each country to implement its own sovereign policies to combat hunger”, explained Wellington Dias. “Through this alliance, developed countries can assist poorer nations with both knowledge and financial resources.”
During the meeting, Minister Dias proposed holding the first Global Alliance summit concurrently with the UN Social Summit. “This summit will take place exactly one year after the Alliance’s creation and has the potential to attract leaders from all countries, as the Alliance involves many nations interested in this issue. It will be a moment of great importance for the world”, he stated.
Mubarak Al Kuwari, the executive director, noted that Qatar is renowned for hosting major events and promoting a policy of mediation in conflicts and disputes. “Regarding the Global Alliance, we understand that this type of initiative is very important, and we are eager to participate. We want to work together with Brazil to discuss various issues, especially hunger and poverty. We are impressed by Brazil’s dedication to this issue. We will work together and hold the first Global Alliance summit together here in Doha”, he pledged.
UN World Summit on Social Development
The proposal for the UN World Summit on Social Development arises from the “Our Common Agenda”, report. The goal is to update and expand the commitments of the Copenhagen Declaration (1995), which was issued during the last Summit on Social Development, which will mark its 30th anniversary.
Brazil prioritized the fight against hunger, poverty, and inequality during its G20 presidency, culminating in the creation of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. The Alliance’s governance plan envisions holding a summit on hunger and poverty, preferably on the sidelines of other major international events.
