Johannesburg, 22 November 2025 <\/strong>\u2013 Heads of State at the G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit today reiterated their commitment to the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty in a powerful demonstration of solidarity despite mounting global challenges.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Meeting at the first G20 Leaders\u2019 Summit to take place in Africa, global leaders underscored the Global Alliance as \u201can important platform for addressing poverty, hunger and inequality in an integrated and sustainable manner\u201d in their Leaders\u2019 Declaration<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSouth Africa made food security one of the priorities of our G20 Presidency, building on the excellent work of previous presidencies, including the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty established under the Brazilian Presidency,\u201d said President Cyril Ramaphosa, host of the Johannesburg summit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This renewed endorsement comes at a critical time, when persistent food inflation, price volatility, climate change and conflict continue to put vulnerable communities at risk. The move builds on momentum from the recent Bel\u00e9m Declaration on Hunger, Poverty, and Human-Centered Climate Action, adopted by over 43 countries<\/a> at COP30 in Brazil earlier this month. In July, Development Ministers and heads of international organizations adopted the G20 Skukuza Declaration<\/a>, emphasizing the Global Alliance\u2019s efforts to link social protection with food security, nutrition, inclusion and sustainable food systems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Together, these declarations reflect a growing consensus: addressing social justice is a cornerstone of climate action. As highlighted in a recent op-ed<\/a> by President Ramaphosa, President Luiz In\u00e1cio Lula da Silva of Brazil, and Prime Minister Pedro S\u00e1nchez of Spain, a new people-centred approach to multilateral cooperation is an essential response to the interconnected crises of climate change and global inequality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe [Global] Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, launched during Brazil\u2019s G20 presidency, and the South African initiative on the macroeconomic dimensions of food security and food prices go hand in hand. It is time to declare inequality a global emergency and redesign the rules and institutions that sustain asymmetries,\u201d highlighted President Lula during the event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Global Alliance, born under Brazil\u2019s G20 Presidency, is central to this vision. It provides the political and technical architecture to turn high-level commitments into real-world policies to end hunger and poverty with speed and scale.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
