In addition to the Digital Hub, the agency will focus on school meals, nutrition, social protection, and resilience. The WFP’s membership in the Alliance was announced this Friday.
The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) announced on Friday, November 8th, that it has joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty as a founding member. The Global Alliance, an initiative under Brazil’s G20 presidency, aims to accelerate efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) 1 – the eradication of poverty – and SDG 2 – zero hunger.
The WFP was invited to participate in the G20 Task Force responsible for drafting the founding documents of the Global Alliance. The UN agency also worked closely with Brazil’s G20 presidency and other international organizations to establish the policy framework that forms the Alliance’s core.
“The WFP is proud to be a founding member of the Global Alliance, and we commend Brazil’s G20 presidency for shining a global spotlight on the interconnected issues of poverty, hunger, and malnutrition,” said Cindy McCain, WFP Executive Director. “We will work closely with partner governments to design and implement programs that combat hunger and strengthen long-term food security, with a strong focus on school meals, nutrition, social protection, and resilience. Partnerships and innovation are the driving forces behind the Global Alliance and will fuel our joint progress as we ramp up global efforts to fight hunger and poverty.”

Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation, Wellington Dias, explained that the Alliance’s goal is to be a practical mechanism that will drive the mobilization of existing funds and resources, organizing them around two key principles: focusing on the most vulnerable and consistently implementing national policies.
“Only through partnerships and cooperation can we eradicate hunger and poverty worldwide. We are honored to have the World Food Programme, a long-time partner of Brazil, in the Global Alliance. As a founding member, the WFP will play a pivotal role in the success of this initiative and in advancing collective efforts toward SDG 1 and SDG 2,” stated Wellington Dias.
Digital Hub
The WFP is also collaborating closely with Brazil’s G20 presidency to develop a Digital Hub for the Global Alliance, which will efficiently respond to government requests for support in implementing hunger and poverty reduction policies and programs.
“The Digital Hub of the Global Alliance is an innovative effort to help reverse recent negative trends in SDG 1 and SDG 2. Through this Hub, we aim to fast-track progress toward the 2030 Agenda,” said Stanlake Samkange, WFP’s Director of Multilateral and Country Program Partnerships. “The WFP is pleased to contribute our technical expertise to enhance the Global Alliance’s transparency, effectiveness, and efficiency, helping stakeholders connect government requests for support with relevant knowledge and funding partners.”
