On Thursday, November 7th, Norway officially joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a major priority of Brazil’s G20 presidency, which aims to channel resources into effective programs targeting hunger and poverty—two critical Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

“We are committed to collaborating with the Global Alliance, financially supporting the mobilization of national and international resources to promote food security,” emphasized Norway’s Minister of International Development, Anne Beathe Tvinnereim, as she presented the Statement of Commitments reinforcing Norway’s support for the initiative.

Norway’s commitments include cross-sector cooperation aimed at strengthening agricultural resilience and ensuring farmers’ incomes through government negotiations. Sustainable feed is also a priority, with a goal for all fish and livestock feed to come from sustainable sources, contributing to emission reductions. Food security, animal welfare, and plant health are key elements for building a sustainable and resilient food system.

“G20 leadership is essential to accelerate global efforts against poverty and hunger. The group has the necessary influence to mobilize more financial resources to tackle these issues,” said Tvinnereim.

The Alliance is open to countries, institutions, and international organizations, among others, that share its principles. Drawing on successful strategies to promote food security and reduce poverty, the Alliance facilitates partnerships that contribute either financial resources or technical knowledge.

“Norway has supported the Global Alliance from its inception and now formalizes this commitment by joining as a member. This is a crucial step in the fight against hunger and poverty and is essential for the initiative’s success,” stated Wellington Dias, Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation. “Through this Alliance, we aim to provide political support, financial resources, and technical cooperation to implement effective policies in each participating country’s areas of interest,” he added.

Norway also hopes that South Africa will keep the G20’s focus on fighting hunger and poverty as it takes on the G20 presidency on December 1st of this year. “It is essential that the primary focus be on Sub-Saharan Africa to strengthen its food self-sufficiency. These countries are expected to import over $100 billion worth of food by 2025, yet they have significant potential to produce much more of their own food,” Tvinnereim highlighted.
