The agency endorsed the initiative as a tool for generating the political momentum needed to drive hunger and poverty eradication.
On Thursday, October 17th, International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) announced its membership in the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. In a statement released on its website, the UN agency highlighted the Alliance as a crucial instrument to provide the political momentum needed to place the world back on the path to ending hunger and poverty.
UNDP emphasized the importance of the initiative in light of crises and conflicts that have worsened global poverty. According to agency estimates, approximately 692 million people are expected to be living in extreme poverty by 2024. Additionally, UNDP noted that without a significant acceleration in efforts, fewer than three out of ten countries are projected to halve their national poverty rates by the end of the decade.
“The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, proposed by Brazil’s G20 presidency, reflects a growing collective will to expedite efforts in this critical area and provide the political drive necessary to steer the world back toward the eradication of hunger and poverty. Today, as part of the UN family, UNDP joins the Global Alliance and stands ready to support the operationalization of this initiative,” stated UNDP Administrator Achim Steiner in a statement.

Data from the 2024 Multidimensional Poverty Index reveal that around 455 million people who are multidimensionally poor live in countries experiencing conflict, fragility, or low peace levels. On average, poverty rates are more than three times higher in countries affected by war.
Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation, Wellington Dias, underscored the importance of having UNDP as a partner and highlighted the urgent need to address global food insecurity. “A person who goes hungry can’t sleep, can’t study, can’t live. This is about life itself, which is why the president of Brazil, a global leader in the fight against hunger and poverty, has embraced this mission within Brazil’s G20 presidency and the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty,” he remarked. “UNDP’s membership will be another vital step in this collective effort to combat hunger and poverty.”
Global Alliance
The Global Alliance is one of the top priorities of Brazil’s G20 presidency, aiming to accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 1 and 2. The Alliance also aims to reduce inequalities and contribute to revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development and other interconnected SDGs, advocating for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable transition pathways.
