The new hub will mobilize international support for national programmes in the region, while connecting proven approaches with countries facing supply chain disruptions and acute hunger risks

Brasília, Brazil, 03 March 2026 – Marking another significant step in the fight against hunger and poverty, the Global Alliance launched its regional office in Brasília today. Housed by the Institute for Applied Economic Research (IPEA), the Alliance office in Brasília was officially inaugurated by Wellington Dias, Minister of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight against Hunger and Co-chair of the Alliance Board of Champions, together with with Luciana Servo, President of IPEA.

The Brasília office is the Alliance’s first regional hub in full operation, enhancing its global Support Mechanism alongside its main headquarters in Rome. This expanded presence reinforces the Alliance’s long-term commitment to connecting country-led efforts with international support. Earlier today, Rosângela Lula da Silva, First Lady of Brazil, visited the new office, underscoring Brazil’s key role in advancing global responses to inequality and food insecurity.

The launch comes on the heels of a new United Nations report showing that countries in Latin America and the Caribbean have reduced undernourishment for the fourth consecutive year. This progress reflects sustained national efforts and targeted interventions across the region. Many of these experiences are documented in the Global Alliance Policy Basket – a vast repository of evidence-based policy instruments and implementation lessons drawn from countries across different regions.

“The Global Alliance was launched based on the conviction that hunger is not fate, it is a political choice. A global presence strengthens the Alliance’s international standing and its ability to support countries where they need it most,” emphasized Minister Wellington in his remarks at the event. Also in attendance at the inauguration were senior representatives of China, Cuba, the Inter-American Development Bank, the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), the World Food Programme (WFP) and other Alliance members.

IPEA President Luciana Servo emphasized that the institute provided technical support to the G20 Task Force Against Hunger and Poverty and served on the interim team of the Global Alliance Support Mechanism throughout 2025. “Hosting the Brasília office reinforces our institutional mission of ensuring that public decision-making and public debate are informed by evidence, particularly in efforts to combat hunger and poverty,” she added.

Formalized at the 2024 G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, the Global Alliance coordinates policy, financing and technical support to accelerate efforts to end hunger and extreme poverty by 2030. Beyond serving as a hub to mobilize support for government-led programmes in the region, the Brasília office will lead the curation of the Policy Basket, helping connect demand from different countries with proven solutions.

Latin America’s advances in ending hunger are not only a regional success story, but also a foundation for co-operation. Through the Alliance, policymakers from the region will work hand in hand with counterparts in Africa and Asia to adapt proven approaches against hunger and poverty to different local realities. The urgency of strengthened co-operation is clear. Countries in sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia continue to face acute food insecurity, with disruptions to shipping routes through the Red Sea and rising fuel prices following instability in the Middle East adding further layers of risk.

As geopolitical tensions continue to test coordinated efforts to end hunger and poverty, today’s opening signals the Alliance’s continued commitment to anchoring anti-hunger and -poverty efforts in evidence, partnership and nationally-owned solutions.
