Connecting the dots: Regional Forum links poverty alleviation to climate resilience

The regional forum highlighted the importance of social protection in addressing environmental challenges and promoting inclusive climate action, aligning strategies from Latin America and the Caribbean with COP30.

To promote collaboration and analyze policies for strengthening rural livelihoods and environmental conservation through social protection, the regional forum “Strengthening Rural Livelihoods and Environmental Conservation through Social Protection: Insights from Latin America and the Caribbean for Inclusive Climate Action” convened in Brasilia on March 18-19, 2025.

This collaborative initiative, spearheaded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), and the Brazilian Ministry of Environment and Climate Change, underscored the critical role of social protection in addressing environmental challenges and bolstering the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty’s core mission.

Minister Wellington Dias of Brazil’s Ministry of Development and Social Assistance, Family and Fight Against Hunger, played a prominent role in the event, emphasizing that social protection is not tangential, but central to addressing environmental crises. “Our goal, like that of all countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, is development. And there is no development if we do not look at the problem of hunger and the problem of poverty. It is possible to look at these problems and make their solutions integrated with the solutions for the environment. That is what sustainability is”, he stated.
