The three nations officially joined the Global Alliance this week, reinforcing their efforts for improved food security, social protection and inclusive growth at home and abroad.
Rome, Italy, 15 December – The Global Alliance welcomed three new members this week as Brunei Darussalam, the Republic of San Marino and the Kingdom of Sweden joined the growing international coalition to eradicate hunger and poverty, despite global uncertainty.
“Every new membership represents renewed political commitment to confront two of the most urgent challenges of our time,” said Wellington Dias, Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Fight against Hunger and Co-Chair of the Global Alliance Board of Champions. “When governments step up with strong political will and development partners align, hunger and poverty can become history.”
Brunei Darussalam: Scaling up inclusive policies
While recognized as a high-income nation, Brunei Darussalam faces unique food security and nutrition challenges, including child malnutrition and reliance on food imports. Joining the Alliance under its national and knowledge pillars, Brunei Darussalam commits to adapting and implementing evidence-based programmes from the Alliance’s Policy Basket and sharing its own learnings with other Alliance members across Southeast Asia and beyond.
San Marino: Stepping up local and global action
The small European nation of San Marino underscores its commitment to implement domestic policies and programmes linked to ending hunger and poverty by joining the Global Alliance.
“Our membership in the Global Alliance marks an important step in expanding our international collaboration on pivotal issues, such as ending global hunger and poverty. Regardless of the size or geographic location of member countries, we all share common challenges, and we are pleased to join this important Alliance to address them together in a constructive way,” emphasized Ms. Catia Cesarini, Director of the Department of Territory and Environment of the Republic of San Marino.
This move builds on San Marino’s long-standing commitment to ensure healthy eating habits, scale up organic farming, and combat food loss and waste. Beyond its borders, San Marino plans to support other Alliance members through knowledge exchange on policy implementation, proving that small states can play a big role in global solutions for a hunger and poverty-free world.
Sweden: Backing social justice with millions
Through its new membership, Sweden reaffirms its leadership in international cooperation to fight hunger and poverty, pledging to improve the allocation and alignment of its resources. In 2025 alone, Sweden has directed an estimated SEK 2477 million towards food security and livelihood programmes, including contributions to the Action Against Hunger, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) and the World Food Programme (WFP). In its Statement of Commitment, Sweden stressed the importance of large-scale, integrated approaches and committed to promoting shared learning and mobilizing public and private resources at scale.
This growing membership reflects the increasing momentum behind the Global Alliance as countries across different regions intensify coordinated action to address structural drivers of hunger and poverty, including inequality, vulnerability to shocks and limited access to essential services.

Launched at the G20 Summit in Brazil in November 2024, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty has grown from 148 founding members to over 200 members in one year, including more than 100 countries, the African Union, European Union, 24 international organizations, 9 international financial institutions, and over 30 philanthropic and non-governmental organizations. The Alliance aims to accelerate progress toward SDGs 1 and 2 by providing coordinated support from its members for national, large-scale evidence-based policies and programs.
