On Wednesday, October 9th, the General Secretariat of the Organization of American States (OAS) announced its membership as a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative, a key priority of Brazil’s G20 presidency, seeks to mobilize resources and expertise for the implementation of effective public policies to reduce food insecurity and poverty worldwide.
“We are deeply honored and confident that the OAS will make a fundamental contribution to the success of this initiative,” stated Wellington Dias, Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation. “The Alliance is open to the voluntary participation of countries and interested organizations. If we walk this path together, the Global Alliance will be the best legacy we could leave for future generations,” he added.
In a statement, the OAS acknowledged hunger and malnutrition as “perverse and ethically unacceptable manifestations of structural poverty and inequality.” The organization also emphasized its commitment to achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the eradication of hunger and poverty, and to ensuring that more rights reach more people.
As a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, the OAS stands ready to align actions and develop innovative solutions alongside other members. The organization will also contribute by sharing practices and experiences that support the fight against poverty and inequality.
The statement further highlights the OAS’s commitment to promoting the mission of the Global Alliance by accelerating cooperation at global, regional, national, and local levels to eradicate poverty and reduce inequality.
While the Alliance was born from the G20, it is open to all countries, as well as international organizations, knowledge institutions, development banks, and philanthropic foundations.
