Recent crises have stalled progress to end poverty and hunger, with Covid-19, climate-related disasters and conflicts pushing millions more people into extreme poverty and food insecurity. Under the leadership of Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty was conceived in response to this retrogression and encourage G20 countries to accelerate progress towards ending hunger and poverty through coordinated support from its members.
Through its membership, IDS endorses the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty and its mission to support and accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty (SDGs 1 and 2) while reducing inequalities (SDG 10) and contributing to global partnerships for sustainable development (SDG 17). As well as supporting the achievement of other interlinked SDGs, and championing sustainable, inclusive and just transitions.

It builds on IDS’ long history of work on poverty, hunger and nutrition, and the evidence-based policy influencing undertaken with partners in Brazil and South Africa as part of the G20 process. We look forward to pursuing the aims of the Alliance during the UK’s G20 Presidency next year, and beyond,” Anuradha Joshi, Director of IDS, said.
