Timor-Leste is committed to eradicating malnutrition. “Our efforts focus on addressing inequalities in food systems, amplifying the voices of least developed and fragile countries,” says the President of the Republic of Timor-Leste, José Ramos-Horta.

President José Ramos-Horta of Timor-Leste has officially announced the country’s membership in the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. In his announcement, Ramos-Horta underscored Timor-Leste’s commitment to eradicating malnutrition, both domestically and globally. 

“Our efforts are focused on addressing inequalities in food systems and amplifying the voices of the least developed countries and fragile states,” stated President Ramos-Horta. 

In a video message to the Alliance, the President emphasized the importance of advocating for stronger food and nutrition security systems, aligning with the goals of the Global Alliance. 

Timor-Leste’s efforts to combat malnutrition are being supported by the Global Task Force on Social Protection and Nutrition, a joint initiative with Chile, backed by the World Food Programme. 

Proposed by Brazil during its G-20 presidency, the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty was launched in November 2024 with the participation of 148 founding members, including 82 countries, the African Union, the European Union, 24 international organizations, nine international financial institutions and 34 philanthropic and non-governmental organizations. The goal is to eradicate hunger and poverty by 2030, reduce inequalities and contribute to sustainable development.
