The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty brings together governments, institutions, and organizations dedicated to eradicating hunger and poverty worldwide. The initiative, which recently welcomed Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV) as a member, aims to promote effective public policies and disseminate successful practices, focusing on expanding adaptable programs across different countries. With the technical and intellectual support of institutions like FGV, the Alliance seeks to strengthen national and international capacities to tackle these global crises.

Addressing social inequality is a priority on Brazil’s agenda, and the country offers valuable lessons to other developing nations. “Last year, 24.4 million Brazilians overcame hunger, but the challenge remains enormous. Hunger affects about 733 million people globally,” noted Wellington Dias, Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation. “The Alliance seeks to expand the adoption of successful national programs on a large scale to end hunger and poverty. FGV’s expertise in producing and sharing knowledge will make a tremendous contribution to this collective effort and mark another step toward the success of this initiative.”

As one of its first actions within the Alliance, FGV will organize a special session on hunger and poverty at the Doha Forum, which gathers global leaders and intellectuals from various sectors. The event, scheduled for December 2024, will include the participation of Minister Wellington Dias. “This initiative will mark the beginning of a coordinated cycle of actions between FGV, the Ministry of Social Development (MDS), and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to establish the Alliance as a transformative force against global inequalities,” said Marlos Lima, FGV’s Director of International Relations.
