The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty featured prominently during the first in-person meetings of the G20 Agriculture Working Group (AWG) and Food Security Task Force (FSTF), held in Durban, South Africa. The Alliance’s inclusion in both tracks, alongside the establishment of a dedicated Food Security Task Force under South Africa’s presidency, reflects the G20’s growing commitment to advancing food security and addressing rural poverty. 

During the AWG sessions (22–23 April), the Alliance was referenced as a key initiative driving inclusive and resilient food systems. In particular, during a session on building climate resilience for sustainable agricultural production, facilitated by Brazil, discussions emphasized the importance of scaling up inclusive climate action to strengthen agriculture and food systems on the road to COP30. 

On 25 April, the Alliance was further highlighted during the meeting of the G20 Food Security Task Force. An update briefing on the Alliance showcased its role as a concrete mechanism to accelerate national action, complementing the macroeconomic and regional focus defined by the South African G20 Presidency for the Task Force. Several delegations recognized the Alliance, alongside the Committee on World Food Security, as key instruments for coherent global efforts in this area. 

While this year’s focus in Durban centered primarily on food security, the Alliance served as a reminder of the close interconnection between hunger and poverty, particularly in rural areas. Many of the policies it promotes — from expanding social protection to strengthening family farming — simultaneously tackle food insecurity and rural poverty, generating double dividends.
