The announcement was made by the institution’s executive president, Sergio Díaz-Granados, alongside Minister Wellington Dias, on the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, during an event organized in collaboration with UNDP.
On the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, CAF, the Development Bank of Latin America and the Caribbean, formally joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative, proposed by Brazil under its G20 presidency, aims to establish an international coalition to combat hunger and poverty worldwide. The announcement was made on Thursday, October 17th, by CAF’s Executive President, Sergio Díaz-Granados, alongside Brazil’s Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation, Wellington Dias. Both participated virtually in the event “Reimagining Solutions for Poverty,” held in New York in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).
CAF is the first multilateral financial institution to join the Alliance. As a member, it commits to optimizing the allocation and alignment of its resources, leveraging cooperation through the Global Alliance to support member countries in implementing, improving, or expanding selected policies and programs from the Alliance’s reference framework. The goal is to strengthen the fight against hunger and poverty through sustainable financing and implementation strategies led by individual nations.
“CAF is ready to serve as a regional voice for the Global Alliance, advocating for Latin American and Caribbean solutions to the global challenges of hunger and poverty. We are committed to working closely with the governments of our member countries, including Brazil, to ensure that these initiatives are impactful and aligned with each government’s strategic priorities,” stated Díaz-Granados.
Minister Wellington Dias noted that CAF has supported the creation of the Global Alliance from the outset. “We are honored by CAF’s membership as a founding member, certain that this partnership will be crucial to the initiative’s success,” he said. “The Alliance seeks to scale up the adoption of successful national programs to eradicate hunger and poverty worldwide. I have no doubt that, if we work together, we will be ever closer to achieving these goals,” he added.

In recent years, CAF has allocated approximately $1.6 billion to initiatives that directly contribute to the fight against hunger and poverty. The institution’s actions focus on critical areas, such as reducing malnutrition, strengthening social protection systems, and fostering sustainable rural development. CAF also prioritizes investments in sustainable infrastructure and climate-resilient agriculture, which are essential for promoting food security and economic opportunities for vulnerable communities.
In its membership document, CAF recognizes that hunger and poverty remain persistent challenges for humanity, requiring comprehensive and integrated approaches. The institution seeks to align efforts within the region, offering member countries support in development challenges, including financial services, knowledge, and technical assistance.
Global Alliance
The mission of the Global Alliance, from its launch through 2030, will be to support and accelerate efforts to eradicate hunger and poverty, SDGs 1 and 2. The Alliance also aims to reduce inequalities and contribute to revitalizing global partnerships for sustainable development and other interconnected SDGs, advocating for sustainable, inclusive, and equitable transition pathways. The Alliance is open to governments, international organizations, knowledge institutions, development banks, philanthropic foundations, and more.
