The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty has expanded its membership, welcoming UN Women in a move that underscores the critical link between gender equality and the fight against global hunger and poverty. The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is also expanding to include: The International Partnership on Religion and Sustainable Development; ESALQ/USP; Luxembourg; Dubai Cares.
The Global Alliance is also proud to announce the joining of the International Partnership on Religion and Sustainable Development, as well as the addition of ESALQ/USP, Luxembourg, and Dubai Cares.
Maria Noel Vaeza, UN Women’s Regional Director for Latin America and the Caribbean, emphasized the disproportionate impact of poverty on women and highlighted the essential role women play in food security, particularly in rural, Afro-descendant, and indigenous communities. The Global Alliance seeks to create a platform uniting countries committed to addressing hunger and poverty with partners capable of providing technical and financial support.
“It is with great honor and satisfaction that I welcome the accession of UN Women to the Global Alliance,” said Wellington Dias, Minister and Chairman of the Board of the Global Alliance.
The announcement of UN Women’s entry occurred during a side event at the 69th session of the UN Commission on the Status of Women (CSW) in New York. Discussions at the event focused on generating recommendations for the Alliance’s Council of Champions, specifically addressing actions to improve outcomes for women in the context of food insecurity and poverty.
The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is also expanding to include:
- The International Partnership on Religion and Sustainable Development
- ESALQ/USP
- Luxembourg
- Dubai Cares
These additions aim to bolster the global effort to eradicate hunger and poverty, reduce inequalities, and promote sustainable and inclusive development. The Global Alliance operates through three main pillars: national, financial, and knowledge, to facilitate the mobilization and improved alignment of support for evidence-based, country-led programs.
