The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty expanded its global mission by welcoming new members at the Brazil – Caribbean Summit, held in Brasília from June 11 to 13. The event gathered delegations from 16 Caribbean nations and regional institutions to strengthen cooperation on key issues such as food security, climate change, energy transition, disaster resilience, and digital connectivity.
On June 13, f Barbados, Cuba, Saint Lucia, and the Caribbean Development Bank formalized their accessions through their respective Statements of Commitment. This milestone, announced before heads of state, ministers, and partners, reinforced the Global Alliance’s momentum as a key innovative platform for multilateral collaboration to combat hunger and poverty.
Launched at the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro in November 2023, the Alliance now has 192 members, including 101 countries, as well as international organizations, philanthropic institutions, and civil society.
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva noted that over 12 million people in the Caribbean still suffer from hunger, according to FAO, and reaffirmed Brazil’s commitment to support vulnerable Caribbean nations facing climate challenges. “This challenge requires sound policies and adequate financing. That is the purpose of the Global Alliance, and I hope more will join us soon,” he said, citing Brazilian programs like Garantia Safra (harvest insurance) and the Cisterns Program as models to share.
Brazil’s Minister of Social Development, Family and Fight Against Hunger — and Co-Chair of the Global Alliance’s Board of Champions — Wellington Dias highlighted the urgency of the mission: “We have until 2030 to reduce hunger and make progress in overcoming poverty. Today’s step is crucial for those who need it most.” A key highlight was the presentation of Haiti’s Fast Track Implementation Plan, making it the first Caribbean country eligible for the seeking of financial and technical support from members under the Global Alliance approach – setting a precedent for member engagement.
