Being responsible for enshrining policies into law and approving national budgets, parliaments have a key role in successful implementation of national policies and programs against hunger and poverty. This observation led Min Wellington Dias to propose that a global parliamentary front, independent but coordinated with the Global Alliance, could be built by willing lawmakers on top of current regional parliamentary fronts.  

Presented at the event promoted by the Ibero-American Parliamentary Front for Food Security for All, in Spain, the suggestion was well received by the regional coordinator of the Parliamentary Front against Hunger of Latin America and the Caribbean, Sonia Rojas Méndez, deputy from Costa Rica. She expressed their willingness to contribute to this endeavor, noting it requires consultation with Latin American parliamentarians, Spain, and Portugal.   

Mrs. Eva Granados, who spoke at the opening session of the event, highlighted that alliances are crucial for international cooperation in challenging times, she mentioned the Global Alliance was one example of this joint effort:  “Brazil together with Spain are co-presiding the Board of Champions of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, which already includes over 90 countries and many UN organizations and IFIs, pushing the agenda of the fight against hunger and poverty and food sovereignty”.   

Granados also announced that concrete initiatives will be presented by Brazil and Spain on behalf of the Global Alliance during a side event in the upcoming Fourth International Conference on Finance for Development in Sevilla.  

In the same panel, Mexico’s representative in the Global Alliance Board of Champions, Alejandra del Moral, Executive Director of the Mexican Agency for International Development Cooperation (AMEXCID), mention Mexico’s commitment to offer knowledge and share experience from programmes like Sembrando Vidas to countries seeking effective policies to combat poverty, hunger, and malnutrition that within the framework of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty.   

These discussions underscored the recognition of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty as a significant high-level initiative led by governments in partnership with UN organizations, international financial institutions, philanthropy, knowledge institutions and civil society. The proposal for a dedicated parliamentary counterpart or coordinated parliamentary effort was presented as a necessary complement to strengthen legislative action and resource allocation at the national level, vital for achieving the alliance’s objectives.

Parliamentarians, international organizations, and experts from across Ibero-America and the Caribbean have gathered at the University of Salamanca for the event, titled “It all Stars with Food: Legislative actions to achieve food security and nutrition with a gender focus in Ibero-America and the Caribbean,” aimed to strengthen political and academic commitment to combating hunger and malnutrition and promoting more inclusive, sustainable, and resilient agri-food systems. The event was organized by the University of Salamanca and the Senate of Spain, in collaboration with key partners such as the FAO, AECID, SEGIB, the Parliamentary Fronts against Hunger (FPH), FIAP, and AMEXCID.  

About the Global Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and for the Eradication of Poverty:  

The Global Parliamentary Alliance against Hunger and for the Eradication of Poverty would be a network grounded in democratic legitimacy and parliamentary sensitivity to the needs of voters. It could operate independently, but in coordination with the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, to promote the approval and expansion of essential laws, budgets, and programs to fight hunger and poverty in each country.  

Regional platforms, such as the Ibero-American and Caribbean Parliamentary Alliance and the Pan-African Parliamentary Alliance for Food and Nutrition Security, can serve as strong foundations for building a broader and more influential Global Parliamentary Alliance.
