The International Chamber of Commerce (ICC) has become a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. This initiative, a priority of Brazil’s G20 presidency, seeks to mobilize resources and expertise to implement effective public policies for reducing food insecurity and poverty across the globe.

“As the world’s largest business organization, the ICC is uniquely positioned to leverage the private sector’s expertise to develop scalable, sustainable solutions for fighting global hunger,” said ICC Secretary-General John W.H. Denton AO. “We applaud the Global Alliance initiative and are committed to advancing integrated, large-scale solutions to assist the world’s poorest and most vulnerable populations. This further underscores the vital role of international trade in eradicating hunger and poverty worldwide,” he added.

As a founding member of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, the ICC joins the mission to support and accelerate efforts to eliminate hunger and poverty (SDGs 1 and 2) while also working to reduce inequalities (SDG 10). The Alliance aims to reinvigorate global partnerships for sustainable development (SDG 17) and to achieve other interrelated SDGs by promoting sustainable, inclusive, and equitable transitions.

“The ICC’s participation is crucial to the success of this collective effort and marks another important step in the fight against global hunger and poverty,” stated Wellington Dias, Minister of Social Development and Assistance, Family, and Hunger Alleviation. “The Alliance is a proposal discussed and agreed upon by the entire G20 to expand the adoption of successful national programs on a large scale to end hunger and poverty worldwide. While born from the G20, it is open to all countries and organizations that wish to join,” he emphasized.

Expertise

The ICC recognizes that hunger and malnutrition are direct results of poverty and inequality. It will support the Alliance by drawing on its expertise and its ICC Agrifood Initiative, which serves as a platform to share knowledge and lessons across public and private sectors in the agrifood space.

Building on its status as a permanent observer to the United Nations General Assembly, the ICC Agrifood Initiative has developed partnerships with Rome-based UN food and agriculture agencies: the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the World Food Programme (WFP), and the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
