With focus on joint programs and attraction of investments and sharing of experiences, Uzbekistan becomes member of the Alliance

According to the country, membership provides opportunities to share experiences, attract international investment and implement joint programs

Uzbekistan has officially joined the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. The statement, published on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, describes the initiative as “an important step in strengthening global efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals and improve food security in the country”.

For the government of Uzbekistan, the historic measure was taken in response to the growing challenges of global food security and the country’s desire to actively participate in resolving issues related to hunger, poverty and inequality.

“By joining the Global Alliance, Uzbekistan gains unique opportunities to share experiences, attract international investment and implement joint programs with other countries and organizations to address these urgent problems”, the statement highlights.

Global Alliance

In 2024, the Global Alliance was a priority of the Brazilian presidency of the G20. Throughout the year, members of this group, partner countries and international organizations worked together in a task force dedicated to developing the founding framework for the Alliance, which was unanimously endorsed at the G20 Ministerial Meeting in Rio de Janeiro in July.

Brazil’s leadership of the task force involved close coordination between several ministries, including Development and Social Welfare, Family and Fight against Hunger, Foreign Affairs and Finance, as well as contributions from the Institute of Applied Economic Research (Ipea). Since July, the Alliance has been open to members beyond the G20.

Brazil and Bangladesh were the first to join, followed by all G20 members, including the African Union and the European Union, as well as several countries from all continents. The founding members also include major international organizations, development banks, financial institutions and philanthropic entities. Key UN bodies such as the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), the International Labour Organization (ILO), UNICEF and the World Food Programme (WFP) are also on the list.

The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty was launched on 18 November during the G20 Leaders’ Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
