As 2025 draws to a close, we are delighted to share the final edition of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty Newsletter for this year. In this issue, we celebrate the addition of three new member countries to our Alliance, highlight groundbreaking research on innovative financing for social protection, and reflect on collaborative efforts with 11 countries to expand jobs and economic opportunities for vulnerable households.

As we look ahead to 2026 – a year of renewed commitment and collective action – we extend our heartfelt thanks for your unwavering support in 2025.

Together, we are shaping a future free from hunger and poverty.

A Word from the Director

Dear friends,

As 2025 winds down, I’m tempted to rehearse everything that happened this year — the launch, the growth to 200+ members, the Board of Champions, the Fast-Track countries, the roundtables, the inauguration of our small Support Mechanism team. But you’ve heard that story. You lived it with us.

So let me say something simpler: thank you.

Thank you for staying in this. The world isn’t making it easy. Development budgets are under pressure. Political winds are shifting. The multilateral consensus that underpinned decades of progress is being tested. And yet, here we are, still building momentum together.

What strikes me most after this first year is how much the Alliance’s success depends not on us at the Support Mechanism, but on you. On governments willing to put clear plans on the table and defend them. On partners willing to bend timelines, adjust instruments, and coordinate where coordination is hard. On everyone choosing, deliberately, to work differently so we can work together.

That choice matters more now than ever. When resources are scarce, the temptation is to retreat into familiar lanes. But scarcity is precisely when pooling knowledge and catalytic financing around country-led plans makes the most difference — not as a nice-to-have, but as the only way to stretch what we have toward those who need it most.

This week’s ODI report on a “virtual financing mechanism” for social protection puts numbers to the challenge: 29 countries facing overlapping crises from conflict, climate, and poverty, with social protection coverage often below 15%. The report suggests the Alliance could help coordinate humanitarian, development, and climate finance around national plans. It’s a big idea. Whether it takes exactly that form or another, the direction is right — and it will only happen if members push for it.

Before we scatter for the holidays, I’d like to share a short video message from Minister Wellington Dias and Minister Jose Manuel Albares, representing Brazil and Spain, Co-Chairs of the Board of Champions. They asked to speak directly to each of you — Alliance members, partners, and everyone whose work shapes this effort — with their reflections on the year and hopes for 2026.

New report calls for ‘virtual financing mechanism’ for social protection, Global Alliance named as potential hub

New research by ODI Global outlines pathway to close social protection gaps and connect humanitarian, development and climate finance to national coverage plans. The report identifies the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty as the most effective platform to host and operationalise this mechanism, building on its country-led approach and growing membership.

The three nations officially joined the Global Alliance this month, reinforcing their efforts for improved food security, social protection and inclusive growth at home and abroad. The growing membership reflects increasing momentum as countries across different regions intensify coordinated action to address structural drivers of hunger and poverty.

Countries and development partners align to accelerate economic inclusion for millions

The Global Alliance joined representatives from 11 countries and technical partners at the Jobs for the Poor (J4P) Impact Program Global Convening, held from 2-4 December in Salvador, Brazil to discuss ways to accelerate action on economic inclusion for the poorest households.
