Global Alliance defines next steps and prepares Leaders’ Meeting in Doha

Co-Chairs Wellington Dias of Brazil and Mónica Corrales of Spain lead discussions on national plans to fight hunger and poverty in preparation for the Alliance’s First Leaders’ Meeting in Doha

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty has made significant progress in recent months. Preparations for its First Leaders’ Meeting, scheduled to take place in November in Doha, Qatar, were also among the main topics addressed during the third meeting of the Core Group of the Board of Champions.

The virtual meeting, held on September 9, brought together representatives from several countries, including Brazilian Minister and Co-Chair of the Alliance, Wellington Dias, and Spain’s Alternate Co-Chair, Monica Corrales.

“It was an extremely productive meeting. We made significant progress by defining the next steps for implementing national-level programs to fight hunger and poverty with the support of the Alliance,” explained Wellington Dias. Or “Now, we are entering a crucial stage in this process, preparing the results to be presented in Doha,” added the Minister of Social Development (MDS) of Brazil.

The plans are at different stages, with nine of them already drafted and approved by national governments: Benin, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, Zambia, Haiti, and two for Palestine. “We also made progress in the planning processes in Mozambique and Cambodia. And last week, I met with the team from the Dominican Republic to discuss progress in their implementation plans,” revealed the Minister.

Spain’s Alternate Co-Chair, Monica Corrales, emphasized how the Global Alliance’s efforts will have a positive impact worldwide. “We have a strong commitment to this Alliance. We are eager to work closely with other champions and move forward with this implementation,” she said. “For us, this collaborative spirit is very important. We are committed to working together,” she concluded.

In addition to discussing updates on the “fast track” implementation planning process, the leaders also addressed the implementation of the Support Mechanism and an update on the plans for a Leaders’ Declaration at COP30 on Hunger, Poverty, and Human-Centered Climate Action. Finally, the representatives discussed preparations for the 2nd Board of Champions Meeting, scheduled to take place in Rome on October 17.

During the meeting, participants also debated preparations for the First Leaders’ Meeting of the Global Alliance in Doha. “We are decisively connecting the agendas of fighting hunger and poverty with the necessary climate action. Certainly, we are on the right path and with renewed energy for the challenges ahead,” summarized Wellington Dias. “We have a series of important moments in the coming months, especially our Second Board of Champions Meeting and, of course, the First Leaders’ Meeting in Doha, which will be a milestone for the visibility and impact of our Alliance,” he stressed.
