A word from the interim coordinators

Dear friends and colleagues,

These past few weeks have been perhaps the most intense and exhilarating period for the Alliance since our launch. We are filled with enthusiasm as the interim support team, alongside the first new members of our permanent Support Mechanism, have been working tirelessly. This work has been twofold: pushing forward the crucial, detailed engagement with Alliance members to support the fast-track implementation plans, while simultaneously preparing for our historic first Leaders’ Meeting, set to convene in Doha on November 3rd, on the eve of the Second World Summit for Social Development.

This meeting represents a pivotal moment to translate our collective intent into concrete, country-led implementation. We are truly and deeply excited by the incredible engagement from our members and wish to express our profound gratitude to the government of Qatar for its invaluable support in hosting this landmark gathering.

This accelerating momentum was anchored by a week of major achievements. It culminated in the Second Meeting of the Board of Champions, held on October 13th at the FAO headquarters in Rome. We were honored by the powerful participation of the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, who delivered an urgent and undeniable call to the world: to “include the poor in the budget” and prioritize the fight against hunger over military spending. This same high-level commitment was on display that very same week in Washington D.C., where, during the IMF and World Bank Annual Meetings, we convened Finance Leaders who agreed to shift gears and mobilize support to help fast-track hunger and poverty reduction.

The meeting in Rome was not just ceremonial; it was a moment of critical action. We took the decisive step of officially establishing the Alliance’s Support Mechanism, inaugurating its headquarters in Rome and appointing Renato Domith Godinho as its first Director. This new, dedicated team is the engine that will help us coordinate efforts, support national programs, and facilitate the partnerships needed to achieve our 2030 goals.

The strength of our new mechanism is matched only by the growing strength of our platform. We are thrilled to announce that the Global Alliance has surpassed 200 members, and now counts with 201 members committed to this cause. This includes 104 countries and 97 organizations. We warmly welcome all our new partners, and we would like to extend a special welcome to the Islamic Republic of Pakistan as one of our newest country members.

Looking ahead to Doha, we are excited about the Fast-Track announcements: Ethiopia, Haiti, Kenya, and Zambia will reveal concrete multi-partner plans for large-scale national programs against hunger and poverty — the first results of the Alliance’s ongoing Fast-Track Implementation Planning Initiative. Several other countries, including Benin, Cambodia, Dominican Republic, Indonesia, Mozambique, Palestine, Rwanda, and Tanzania, are finalizing their plans. Leaders from Cuba, Somalia, and other member countries are expected to join this initiative in Doha. Stay tuned to our social media channels and news on November 3rd to discover these announcements first-hand!

This convergence of the engagement of the permanent members of the Support Mechanism, a growing and powerful membership, and the high-level political will demonstrated from Rome to Washington gives us unstoppable momentum as we head to Doha. The move from design to delivery has already started!

The work is steady, it is daily, but together, we are building a new, practical path to serve the world’s poorest and most vulnerable.
