1st Board of Champions Meeting

The first Global Alliance Board of Champions meeting will be hosted by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) on the sidelines of its 48th Governing Council, to be held on 12-13 February 2025. President Alvaro Lario will open the session, welcoming Alliance Champions.

According to the Alliance’s Terms of Reference and Governance Framework, the Board of Champions’ Rules of Procedure must be endorsed by the ad interim Board of Champions. The Rules of Procedure will detail the operation of the Board and further define the roles and responsibilities of its members. The document will provide guidance on aspects such as duration of mandates, transparent selection process, decision making, amendments to the Foundational Documents and to the Board’s Rules of Procedure, as well as other relevant matters.

Among other topics, the meeting will define the following: Adoption of the Rules of Procedure for the Board of Champions; Approval of the composition of the Board of Champions by the interim Board; Election of the Chairs and Vice Chairs (Core Group); Update on the Support Mechanism and the transition period.

The Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty is hiring!

The interim coordination of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is happy to announce the opening of positions for professionals committed to building a world free of hunger and poverty.

The professionals will work in the Support Mechanism of the Global Alliance hosted by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO).

5th Policy Dialogue on Social Protection and Development

The 5th Policy Dialogue on Social Protection and Development, held at the OECD in Paris, brought together policymakers, researchers, and international professionals to discuss the role of social protection in combating poverty and hunger. The dialogue explored how social protection programs can improve child nutrition, support family farmers, and reduce the risks of environmental shocks for vulnerable populations.

Participants, including Renato Godinho, interim coordinator of the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, discussed evidence around social programs dedicated to improving the nutrition and food security of children, poor households, and smallholder farmers. Renato Godinho also made a presentation about the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, highlighting its objectives, governance, and operations.

President Lula thanks Qatar for hosting Global Alliance Against Hunger Summit

On Tuesday (Jan. 7), President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva spoke by phone with Qatar’s Emir, Shaikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani. According to the Planalto presidential palace, the leaders discussed the bilateral relationship between the two countries, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year.

Lula also confirmed that the Emir would visit Brazil this year, reciprocating the president’s visit to Qatar in November 2023. Shaikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani had been in Rio de Janeiro last November for the G20 Summit, hosted by the Brazilian government.

Brazilian Federal Universities strengthen the Alliance’s Knowledge Pillar

In a landmark move to combat hunger and poverty in Brazil and globally, three of the country’s leading federal universities — the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (UFRGS), the Federal University of Goiás (UFG), and the Federal University of Santa Catarina (UFSC) — have formalized their membership in the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty. These are the first federal universities in Brazil to join the initiative, which already includes other academic institutions such as Brazil’s Getúlio Vargas Foundation, the University of Buenos Aires (UBA) in Argentina, and the University of Oxford through the Oxford Poverty and Human Development Initiative (OPHI).  

Knowledge Pillar is the focus of GHAI´s engagement in the Alliance

The Global Health Advocacy Incubator (GHAI) is the newest member of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty to strengthen the Knowledge Pillar. GHAI uses the power of advocacy to reduce preventable deaths and to improve health at scale by changing policies and strengthening systems.

The first meeting of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty interim Board of Champions will happen in hybrid format on the margins of IFAD’s 48th Governing Council Session on February 11 from 1:30 to 4:00 P.M (GMT+1). During the meeting the interim Board will meet for the first time to discuss advances in the Alliance’s Governance and provide guidance to the Alliance’s work in the following months. The meeting will also establish the Boards´ definitive composition, establish its rules of procedure, and maintain a strategic discussion among Champions about how to best enable the conditions for the Alliance´s success.

The Global Alliance will be at the Centre Stage Event at the 48th session of the IFAD Governing Council. The flagship G20 Global Alliance, under Brazil’s presidency, has brought food security and the fight against poverty to the forefront of the development agenda. This event will provide an opportunity to exchange insights, engage in broad and inclusive cross-country dialogue and discuss innovative ideas to build impactful partnerships to address hunger and poverty.
